Spring in South Carolina

No matter where we live or work, life is unique and quite special. We have opportunities to see and feel the wonder of God's nature, the power of His creation, the gentleness of His love. I am so thankful for this moment and the activities and prospects that are "on my plate".

Right now I am listening and reading two very different books. I am almost done listening to "The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl". Quite a sobering account of that black part of history in the midwest. I remember some stories my own mother told me about her childhood during the dirty thirties. These stories took place from the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma, up thru Kansas and Nebraska. I was reminded of the beauty that can exist in that area as well as the ugliness when man takes advantage of the land. On the lighter side, my friend Marie gave me the book "flabbergasted" to read. It is written by a Greenville author and is all about living in this part of the US. I think after reading this novel I will understand singleness and the Greenville culture much better -- thanks Marie :-)

I think it is safe to say this is the first Easter for some time where we were not with family and/or friends. Initially I thought all of the boys and their families were going to get together for a meal, and I was feeling quite sorry for myself. It turns out that did not happen, but in the meantime, Jer and I decided to head to Savannah for a couple days. What a good decision we made. If for no other reason than it was a blessing for me to see the Savannah statue of John Wesley and be reminded of his spiritual journey as it relates to the South. He came to Savannah in 1736 as a missionary but left feeling very empty spiritually. It was not long after this that "his heart was strangely warmed" at a prayer group back in England and his life was changed forever as was the history of the church. I am encouraged and stengthened by his story during this Easter season.

I am also posting some photos. What a gorgeous city and what great weather we had! Much different from our rainy, snowy trip to Charleston earlier in the spring!

One of the beautiful streets, what we often think of as being "southern".

Savannah is made up of many squares so is a great place to walk. We spent both days doing a walking tour with our handy-dandy guides from the Visitor's Center. By seeing the city this way we now know which houses and museums we will return to on our next visit. We also found some wonderful "hidden" restaurants which were so fun. And no, we did not go to Paula Deen's and son's place :-)

Love the pictures, mom. What a great way to spend Easter, attending Wesley's home US city! Love you, r
